Protecting yourself
Health authorities advise an effective repellent (DEET or picaridin), long clothing at active hours, a room with screens or air conditioning and no standing water around your lodging. Dengue mosquitoes bite by day: a repellent only in the evening is not enough. Ask your hotel or villa to empty saucers and vases.
Symptoms and when to see a doctor
Sudden fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain and a rash are the classic signs. Strong abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding or great weakness are warning signs that call for care without delay. Clinics and hospitals are listed in our guide to hospitals, dentists and doctors in Bali. A blood test confirms the diagnosis; do not take anti-inflammatory drugs without medical advice. See a doctor: this page gives no medical advice.
Insurance and evacuation
A hospital stay for dengue can be expensive: check that your insurance covers care on the spot and repatriation. See our guide to travel insurance for Bali.
