Visa and passport
The visa on arrival is requested online on the official Indonesian immigration site: one guide quotes 500,000 rupiah (about 35 dollars) for 30 days, extendable once. Depending on your nationality, other regimes may apply: check the website of the Indonesian embassy in your country. One guide mentions another visa (C1) with financial proof; we could not confirm it, so do not count on it without checking. The passport validity rule (often six months) is to be confirmed with the authorities.
Arrival card and tourist levy
The "All Indonesia" arrival card is free and is filled in online before arrival. The tourist levy of 150,000 rupiah per person is a fixed amount, paid once per stay on Love Bali; keep the QR code in case of a check. If a site asks for more, it is a scam: see scams and safety in Bali.
Rules to follow
- Temples: shoulders and knees covered, sarong lent or rented at the entrance. Non-Hindus cannot always enter the sanctuaries: see for example Tanah Lot and Ulun Danu Beratan.
- Offerings: the small offerings on the ground are sacred objects: avoid stepping on them (common custom, to respect).
- Nyepi: the Balinese day of silence, generally in March, when everything stops for 24 hours and the airport closes; check the date for your year before booking: see best time to visit Bali.
- Scooter: helmet compulsory and a valid licence; see renting a scooter in Bali.
- Drugs: Indonesian law is very strict; do not carry or buy any.
To prepare before leaving
Travel insurance (medical care and scooter), eSIM or SIM card for internet (eSIM or SIM card in Bali), cash for the first days (money in Bali), airport transfer (from the airport to Ubud, Canggu or Seminyak) and choice of area (where to stay in Bali). To plan, see Bali in 3 days.
