Estimated times, without traffic jams; see from the airport to Ubud, Canggu or Seminyak.
Ubud: culture, rice fields and calm
Ubud is the easiest base for a first visit: temples, rice fields, markets, cafés and dance shows are within reach, and evenings are calm. There is no beach: the sea is more than an hour away by road. It is the starting point for most central excursions: Tegallalang rice terraces, sunrise on Mount Batur and temples. See the Ubud page. The centre is sometimes noisy by day because of traffic: look for a stay a few minutes from the centre, among the rice fields, with a shuttle or a scooter.
Canggu: surf, cafés and community life
Canggu is the area for surfers and remote workers: grey-black sand beaches, cafés, gyms, healthy restaurants and social life. It is also heavily built up with dense traffic and narrow streets. It suits young travellers and long stays. See Canggu and surf lessons in Canggu. If you want to see Tanah Lot temple, it is to the north-west, about half an hour by road.
Seminyak: restaurants, beach clubs and boutiques
Seminyak is more urban and more upmarket than Canggu: fine-dining restaurants, beach clubs, boutiques and many hotels. It is the closest of the big bases to the airport, so handy for a late arrival or an early departure. The beach is dark sand with big waves: people watch the sunset there more than they swim. See Seminyak.
Uluwatu: cliffs, surf and hidden beaches
Uluwatu is the Bukit peninsula, with cliffs, beaches at the foot of stairways, surf spots and luxury hotels. There are few shops within walking distance: you need a car or a scooter. Uluwatu Temple and the kecak dance are on site. See Uluwatu.
Sanur and Nusa Dua: calm and family
Sanur is known for its calm beach and pedestrian promenade; it is also the departure point for many fast boats to the Nusa islands. Nusa Dua groups big resorts with beach access, handy for an all-in stay but less local. See Nusa Dua and Nusa Penida.
Amed: diving and sea
Amed is slow and lightly built, with snorkelling from the beach and diving. It is far from everything: plan at least two nights. See Amed.
Which area for your profile
- First visit (one week): 3 nights in Ubud, 3 in Seminyak or Uluwatu.
- Couple: Ubud for culture, Uluwatu or Seminyak for the sea.
- Family: Sanur or Nusa Dua for a calm beach.
- Surf and remote work: Canggu.
- Diving: Amed.
- Tight budget: Kuta and Legian are the cheapest and the closest to the airport, but very busy (we do not detail them here).
