Tanah Lot Temple: opening hours, ticket price, tide and sunset

Updated on October 23, 2026

Tanah Lot is a Balinese Hindu temple built on a rock by the sea on Bali's south-west coast, in the Tabanan area. At high tide it looks cut off in the waves; at low tide you can walk to the foot of the rock. It is one of the most photographed sunsets on the island. Sources checked in October 2026 give about 75,000 rupiah per foreign adult and 40,000 per child, from 7:00 to 19:00, but none is official: confirm on site.

Highlights

The rock and the temple

The rock and the temple

The main temple stands on the rock, surrounded by the sea. Non-Hindu visitors cannot enter the sanctuary: you look at it from the beach and the neighbouring terraces.

The sunset

The sunset

This is the busiest moment. Crowds gather on the cliffs to the north and on restaurant terraces; the golden light lasts a while after sunset.

The holy spring and the cave

At the foot of the rock, at low tide, priests give a blessing to those who want one, and a cave shelters sacred snakes according to guides. Follow staff instructions and respect worshippers.

Practical info

Tips

  • The ticket is paid in cash according to several guides. Also expect a small parking fee (a few thousand rupiah for a scooter or a car). You walk through a lane of shops before reaching the beach: prices are not fixed, so bargain politely. The tide changes every day: look up the tide times for your date before choosing your slot, because access to the rock depends on the sea and on staff. In July and August the site is full late in the day; for a quieter visit come in the morning, or arrive 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. To sleep in the area, see Canggu and where to stay in Bali. The information comes from travel guides, not from the temple's official site.

How to get there

Tanah Lot is north-west of Canggu, about half an hour by road, and an hour or more from the airport depending on traffic (estimate). The easiest way is a private driver or a tour combining Tanah Lot with other sites. See private driver in Bali and from the airport to Ubud, Canggu or Seminyak.
