Pererenan Beach in Bali: Black Sand, Surf, Sunset and Swimming

Updated on October 25, 2026

Pererenan is a dark volcanic-sand beach north-west of Canggu, quieter than Batu Bolong, known for its sunset and for waves rated intermediate to advanced by guides. Access is free. Swimming is not recommended according to one guide: strong currents, with a lifeguard tower on site. Beginners are pointed to Echo Beach, about ten minutes away. Guide information, no official source (October 2026).

Highlights

The black sand at sunset

The volcanic sand and evening light give Pererenan a different character from the pale beaches of the south. One guide recommends bringing a sarong or blanket to sit on.

The surf

The waves suit mainly intermediate to advanced surfers; a beginner should take a lesson at Batu Bolong or Echo Beach. See surf spots by level.

Pererenan village

Around the beach, cafés and villas amid rice fields, quieter than central Canggu.
