Choosing by level
You have never surfed: take a 2-hour lesson in Canggu or Kuta: a school provides board, wetsuit and instructor; see surf lessons in Canggu and Kuta beach. Choose a school with a small group and one instructor for one or two students.
You can stand up and want to progress: Echo Beach or Kedungu when the swell is small; in a big swell, stay on sheltered spots.
You are experienced: the Bukit reefs (see Uluwatu beaches, Padang Padang and Bingin). Access to several spots is by stairs and rocky paths; the tide changes the wave a lot.
Which season
Most guides place the best season in the south-west from April to October (south-east trade winds, offshore wind); one guide cites July to September for Padang Padang. In the rainy season (November to March), the east coast gets good swells, reserved for experienced surfers according to one source. Always check the day's forecast before leaving.
Good to know
Reefs cut: wear booties if needed and do not surf alone at a difficult spot. Respect priority in the water and do not take the peak without the level. Schools and rentals hire boards and leashes; no reliable price was found for this article, so compare on site. For transport, see scooter rental in Bali and private driver in Bali (a board rarely fits in an ordinary car: ask first).
