Kuta Beach (Bali): swimming, surf, sunset and where to stay 2027
Kuta Beach is Bali's busiest beach: a long sandy beach a few minutes from the airport, popular for surf lessons, sunsets and nightlife. It is free, very lively and very commercial. For swimming, follow the flags: Balawista lifeguards patrol every day and swimming is between the red and yellow flags; a solid red flag means no entry, and rip currents are common (guides consulted in October 2026). For a calmer or prettier beach, other areas are better; Kuta suits learning to surf, a night near the airport or going out in the evening.
Highlights

Sunset over Kuta
The highlight of the day, with the sea tinted gold. You sit on the sand or on a rented lounger (about 50,000 IDR according to a guide).
A surf lesson
Kuta is one of the island's learner beaches, with regular waves. According to one guide, allow about 150,000 to 250,000 IDR for a group lesson and 300,000 to 500,000 IDR private for two hours, with a foam board to start: compare schools and choose a reputable one. For a lesson organised with transfer, see the surf lesson in Canggu.
Practical info
Tips
- Swim in the south, near Discovery Mall, where the sea is generally calmer than towards Legian and Seminyak, according to a guide. Politely refuse insistent sellers and watch your belongings (see scams and safety in Bali). One guide advises against November to February because of jellyfish, murky water and rain. Where to sleep: Kuta is cheap but noisy; see where to stay in Bali. For a prettier beach, see Uluwatu.
How to get there
Kuta is about 15 to 20 minutes from Bali airport and 20 to 30 minutes from Seminyak (estimate). Ride-hailing taxi or driver; see from Bali airport to Ubud, Canggu or Seminyak.
