The summary

| Area | Who it suits | What guides say |
|---|---|---|

| South Seminyak | Mid budget | More affordable, but everything is more spread out: plan for taxis |
| Jalan Kayu Aya and the beach | Shopping, families | A busy area, sometimes very crowded |
| Umalas | Calm, villas, couples | North of Seminyak, restaurants and villas, close to Canggu |
Petitenget and Oberoi Street
Guides recommend this area to those who want everything on foot: beach clubs, restaurants and spas, plus the big beachfront hotels. W Bali and Alila Seminyak are named; so is Potato Head Suites & Studios (see Potato Head). Oberoi Street (Jalan Kayu Aya) is home to the Oberoi, quieter in this stretch. The trade-off: it is the priciest and most congested area.
South Seminyak
Guides describe it as the most affordable zone of Seminyak, with a mix of budget hotels and mid-priced resorts; Grand Mercure Seminyak is named. You will use a taxi or an app more often (Grab and Gojek in Bali).
Umalas
Just north of Seminyak, Umalas offers a few luxury villas, boutique hotels and good restaurants, while staying close to Seminyak and Canggu. Monolocale Resort is named by one guide. It is the choice for sleeping in calm and going out by taxi.
Seminyak, Canggu or Legian?
Seminyak: smarter, pricier, beach clubs (Seminyak). Canggu: more relaxed, surf and cafés (where to stay in Canggu). Legian: cheaper, to the south (Legian). For nightlife, see Bali's beach clubs.
How to choose and book
- First time, on foot, no scooter: Petitenget or Oberoi Street.
- Gentler budget: South Seminyak, allowing for taxis.
- Calm: Umalas. Compare the price with taxes and breakfast, the real distance to the beach, and read recent reviews on noise and construction. To compare with other areas, see where to stay in Bali.
