Things to Do in Canggu: Beaches, Surf, Cafés and Where to Stay
Canggu is Bali's fashionable coastal district, north-west of Seminyak: dark-sand beaches, surf breaks, cafés and coworking spaces, with rice fields still squeezed between the villas. There are three moods: Batu Bolong, the liveliest and the most practical for a first visit; Berawa, more upscale, with the big Finns beach club; and Echo Beach, for experienced surfers and seafront bars. Canggu has become very busy in recent years: book your stay in advance. Information drawn from guides in October 2026, with no official source.
Highlights

Echo Beach
A black-sand beach lined with seafront restaurants, including the La Brisa beach club, very busy at sunset. The surf here suits intermediate and experienced levels.
Batu Bolong
The heart of Canggu: the beach where most beginners learn to surf, the cheap warungs and the Old Man's bar right next to it. To learn, see surf lessons in Canggu and Kuta.
Berawa and its beach clubs
To the south, Berawa has Finns, a very large beach club (several pools and bars according to guides), and quieter villas. Pererenan, further north, is calmer and more rural.

Tips
- A first stay is most often at Batu Bolong (everything is walkable, lots of choice); Berawa suits travellers who want more calm and comfort, Echo Beach suits surfers, Pererenan quiet stays. Traffic is heavy at rush hour and the roads are narrow: without a scooter, a driver or a ride-hailing app saves trouble (see renting a scooter in Bali). To compare with Seminyak, see Seminyak, and to choose across the whole island, where to stay in Bali. Twenty minutes' drive north, the Tanah Lot temple is a classic sunset outing.
How to get there
Canggu is about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours from the airport depending on traffic (estimate); see from Bali airport to Ubud, Canggu or Seminyak. Seminyak is 15 to 30 minutes away by road, Ubud one to one and a half hours. A private driver is the simplest for excursions (see private driver in Bali).
