Legian (Bali): beach, sunset, where to stay and Legian vs Kuta vs Seminyak

Updated on October 25, 2026

Legian is the seaside district of south Bali between Kuta and Seminyak, about 2.7 km from Seminyak: a long sandy beach with well-known sunsets, a little less crowded than Kuta, mid-range hotels and lively streets in the evening. According to guides consulted in October 2026, Legian is a good compromise for a first visit, for families and for mid-range budgets, with surf schools on the beach. No entry price: the beach is public.

Highlights

The beach and the sunset

The beach and the sunset

A long stretch of pale sand, calmer than Kuta according to guides, with beach bars at dusk. This is when you settle in with a drink facing the ocean.

Surfing and beginner lessons

Several surf schools are on the beach, and some beach bars offer instructors and boards to rent. The waves suit learners; compare with Kuta beach and surf lessons in Canggu.

Tips

  • Legian, Kuta or Seminyak? Kuta: the cheapest and noisiest, for young travellers and nightlife. Legian: mid-range, calmer near the beach, for a first visit or a family. Seminyak: pricier and smarter, for the beach clubs (Seminyak). In central Legian, Jalan Legian is noisy and congested at night: pick a hotel on a side street towards the beach if you have children or sleep lightly. South Bali is very congested: allow plenty of time to reach the airport (airport transfer). To sleep, compare hotels in Legian, Kuta and Seminyak on price, distance to the beach and recent reviews.

How to get there

Legian is about 20 to 30 minutes from the airport and 10 to 15 minutes from Seminyak, depending on traffic (estimate). Taxi, ride-hailing app or driver; walking distances in the district are short.

Opening hours

Best: Sunset, morning for surfing
Public beach, accessible day and evening, no entry fee (according to guides consulted in October 2026). Surf lessons and rentals: ask for prices on site.
