Bingin Beach in Uluwatu: access, tide, surf and the state of the beach in 2026
Bingin is a sandy beach at the foot of a cliff in western Uluwatu, famous for its reef surf break. Before you go, read this: in July 2025 the authorities demolished about 48 structures on the cliff (warungs, hotels), and according to a June 2026 guide, rubble was still there and few vendors worked on the sand. Badung district announced a staged plan in May 2026 with a new 3-metre-wide staircase, showers and toilets, with the first phase in 2026 and the second in 2027; no confirmed opening date was found. Access is on foot by stairs of about 150 to 190 steps depending on guides, and the beach almost disappears at high tide. Information of October 2026 from guides and media, to confirm on site.
Highlights

The cliff and the wave
The Bingin coast is made of limestone cliffs and a reef on which a hollow wave breaks, reserved for experienced surfers, with a south or south-west swell and an east wind according to one guide. The photo shows the Bingin-Balangan coast.
When the tide is low
At low tide the sand widens and shallow pools appear between the rocks; at high tide the beach shrinks to almost nothing and there is no warning system on the stairs according to one guide. Check the day's tide table before going down.
What else to do
No swimming near the waves and no lifeguard according to one guide: stay on the sand or watch the surfers. For a beach that is easier to reach, see Padang Padang; for sunset, see Uluwatu temple and kecak dance at Uluwatu. On GetYourGuide in October 2026, the Uluwatu temple, kecak and Jimbaran Bay circuit is around 25 to 40 USD.
Practical info
Tips
- Wear good shoes: the staircase becomes very slippery after rain, and it is best not to go down during or right after heavy showers. Bring water (the way back is a long climb), a hat and water shoes for the reef. Parking costs about 5,000 rupiah for a scooter and 10,000 for a car according to an older guide. Check on site what is open before counting on a warung. To choose where to sleep around Uluwatu, see where to stay in Uluwatu and Uluwatu. Unofficial information, to confirm.
How to get there
About 1 hour from the airport and 1 h 30 to 2 hours from Ubud (estimates). By car or ride-hailing to the car park near the access path, then down on foot: there is no vehicle access to the sand.
