Uluwatu Temple: opening hours, ticket price, monkeys and sunset

Updated on October 23, 2026

Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is a Balinese Hindu sea temple built on the edge of a cliff above the Indian Ocean, at the south-western tip of the Bukit peninsula. People come for the view, the sunset and the macaques that live on the site. Sources checked in October 2026 give a fee of about 50,000 rupiah per adult, with a sarong lent at the gate, and opening hours of 7:00 to 19:00. None of them is an official site, so confirm at the ticket desk.

Highlights

The cliff and the temple

The cliff and the temple

The path follows the cliff edge, about 60 metres above the waves according to guides. The holiest shrines are closed to visitors: you admire the whole from the paths and terraces.

The macaques

The macaques

Long-tailed macaques live on the walls and rocks. They are known for snatching glasses, caps, phones and bags. Keep your things in a closed bag and do not show them food.

Sunset

The cliff paths are crowded in the late afternoon. If you also want to see the kecak dance at Uluwatu, allow time: the show takes place inside the grounds at the same hour.

Practical info

Tips

  • The entrance fee ranges from 30,000 to 60,000 rupiah depending on the source and the year; plan on 50,000 rupiah per adult and carry cash. A sarong and sash are provided at the entrance, and shoulders and knees must be covered. The temple ticket and the kecak show ticket are sold separately, except in some tours. Keep sunglasses in a zipped pocket, stay away from the edge and do not follow monkeys onto the walls. To choose where to sleep, see Uluwatu and where to stay in Bali. The information comes from travel guides, not from the temple's official site.

How to get there

The temple is about 25 to 30 km from Bali airport and an hour or more from Seminyak and Canggu depending on traffic (estimate). The easiest way is a private driver for half a day or a taxi with a return agreed in advance, since taxis are scarce at the exit after sunset. See from the airport to Ubud, Canggu or Seminyak and private driver in Bali.

Opening hours

Best: About 1.5 hours before sunset
Daily from 7:00 to 19:00 according to most sources; adult about 50
000 rupiah, child about 30, 000 (unofficial sources, to confirm on site).
