Choosing your area

What to know before you book

  • Roads: some tracks are steep and in poor condition; if you are not comfortable on a scooter, choose a driver or a transfer.
  • Boats: book the crossing in advance and leave a margin if you have a flight next day; rough seas can delay or cancel departures.
  • Power and water: cuts are possible, ask whether the hotel has a generator and hot water.
  • Restaurants: less choice than on Bali; in the south, check whether dinner is served on site.
  • Overnight or day trip? Sleeping on the island avoids the morning boat rush and lets you see the sites early, before the crowds. To choose between the east and west sides, see Nusa Penida: east or west.

Three real places to stay on Nusa Penida (listings read on 29 October 2026)

Facts come from Booking-type listings and a local guide read on 29 October 2026. Penida has fewer well-documented hotels, so check each current page.

  • Sunset Hill Penida Resort. Listed as 3-star, 1.3 km from Nusapenida White Sand Beach, with an outdoor pool, a garden and a restaurant. Why pick it: a pool and a restaurant on site. Limit: not on the beach, so you need a scooter or a car for the sand.
  • La PAYANA House Penida. Set 700 m from Toyapakeh Beach, with an outdoor pool. Why pick it: close to Toyapakeh, where the boats from Nusa Lembongan arrive. Limit: I found few other facts, so read the listing for rooms and breakfast.
  • Adiwana Warnakali. A local guide describes a PADI 5-star dive resort, with new private-pool villas above Toyapakeh opening in 2026. Why pick it: diving base with private-pool villas. Limit: confirm that the new villas are open for your dates.

Hotel pick: Adiwana Warnakali Resort (Booking score 9.1, read 30 October 2026): in Sakti, Nusa Penida; with a pool, guests rate the staff 9.9. Limit: its lowest Booking sub-scores are location (8.4) and free Wi-Fi (8.5).

Hotel pick: Sebuluh Sunset Hill (Booking score 8.6, read 30 October 2026): in Bunga Mekar, Nusa Penida; with a pool, guests rate the value for money 9.1. Limit: its lowest Booking sub-scores are facilities (8.6) and location (8.6).

Our advice

For a first visit, sleep 1 to 2 nights in Toyapakeh or Sakti, then do the sights as an excursion with a driver. Then compare with where to stay in Sanur, where the boats leave from, and where to stay in Bali.
