The two islands in one table
| Criterion | Nusa Penida | Nusa Lembongan |
|---|---|---|
| Scenery | cliffs, Kelingking, Angel's Billabong | mangrove, calm beaches, Devil's Tear |
| Roads | rougher and hilly | short distances, easy |
| Diving | most sites are around Penida, sea can be strong | several dive boats leave from Lembongan |
| Feel | bigger island, wilder | small island, villages on foot, beginner snorkelling |
| Suggested stay | one day to two nights | two to three nights to unwind |
These benchmarks come from guides and dive blogs read in October 2026: there is no official comparison figure, and road conditions change.
When to choose Penida
Penida is right if you want the island's famous images: Kelingking, Diamond Beach, Crystal Bay. Distances are long and roads steep; for a single day, a tour with a driver is easier than a scooter. Compare the east and west options in our guide Nusa Penida: east or west.
When to choose Lembongan
Lembongan suits slower stays, with the mangrove, quiet beaches and beginner-friendly snorkelling. It is also a base for trips to Penida without sleeping there. For lodging see where to stay on Nusa Lembongan. The crossing from Sanur is covered in the fast boat to the Nusa islands and Gilis.
Our pick by profile
Only one day from Bali: Penida, on an organised tour. Two to three days with diving or snorkelling: sleep on Lembongan and make a trip to Penida. Children, or little wish to ride: Lembongan.
FAQ
Can you do both in a day? In theory yes, but it is tiring: the Penida road is long. One island a day is better.
Where is the best diving? The sites are mostly around Penida, reachable from both islands with a dive centre.
What is the best departure point? Sanur, for both islands, under an hour by boat.
How many nights should I plan? One night gives a taste; two to three let you enjoy each island.
