Tegallalang Rice Terraces: Prices, Opening Hours, Best Time and Swings

Updated on October 23, 2026

The Tegallalang rice terraces, about 20 minutes north of Ubud, are the most photographed terraced paddies in Bali: green steps clinging to a valley of coconut palms, with paths that wind down between the plots. The site is very busy, so your arrival time changes everything. Entry is paid as small cash contributions at points run by the landowners, and the swings, pools and cafés with a view are charged separately. Allow one to two hours on site.

Highlights

The view from the road and the cafés on the ridge shows the whole stepped valley. It is the postcard view, with no effort needed, and it costs nothing if you stay at the roadside.

The paths between the plots

The paths between the plots

Dirt tracks and steps lead down between the paddies and let you see the irrigation channels of the subak, Bali's traditional water-sharing system. Some sections are slippery after rain, so good shoes help.

The swings and photo frames

Several operators offer a swing over the valley, with or without a dress provided. Prices we found range from about 250,000 to 400,000 IDR depending on the place and the package: ask what is included before you climb on. See also the Bali swings in Ubud.

Tips

  • Prices noted in October 2026 from travel guides, with no official source: access to the terraces is paid in cash, usually 15,000 to 25,000 IDR per person depending on the entry point, and further contributions of 10,000 to 20,000 IDR are sometimes requested along the paths. Bring small change, as cards are not accepted. Avoid roughly 9:00 to 15:00, when tour buses arrive and shade is scarce. The roadside parking is paid and fills up by late morning. Combine the visit with Tirta Empul or Mount Batur, or choose a day tour from Ubud.

How to get there

The terraces are in Tegallalang, about 20 minutes by car north of central Ubud. The simplest option is a private driver (see private driver in Bali), or a scooter if you are comfortable on the road. Ride-hailing apps cannot always pick you up on site, so plan how you will get back. From Canggu or Seminyak, allow 1.5 to 2 hours.

Opening hours

Best: Early morning
No gate: open access at any hour of the day according to the sources, with contributions at the entry points; cafés and swings tend to open around 8:00-9:00 and close in the late afternoon. Hours and prices not confirmed by an official source: check on site
