Highlights

The shrines in the rock
Arch-shaped niches are cut into the cliff and shelter stone temples; they line a river and purification pools. The calm at the bottom of the valley is the real surprise of the site.
The steps
The round trip is by staircases of about 300 steps according to guides (none confirmed "315"): the climb back is the hard part. Bring water.
Combining
Gunung Kawi is visited on the Tampaksiring water-temple route: see Tirta Empul, very close, Goa Gajah and the Tegallalang rice terraces. To choose which temples to see, see which temples to visit in Bali.
