Mount Batur sunrise trek: which tour to book, prices and tips

Updated on October 23, 2026

The Mount Batur sunrise climb is the most booked excursion from Ubud: you set off in the middle of the night, walk about two hours in the dark with a headlamp, then watch the day break over the lake and Mount Agung, often with breakfast at the summit. This page helps you choose a tour: what it includes, what it costs and which mistakes to avoid. Prices were noted in October 2026 on booking sites and travel blogs and vary a lot from one operator to another, so confirm the price and inclusions before paying. For details of the walk and the volcano itself, see Mount Batur.

Highlights

From the summit the sun appears behind the eastern ridges, above Lake Batur and the caldera. Low cloud filling the valleys is common and is part of the beauty of the moment.

The sky goes from orange to pink to blue in less than half an hour. On cloudy days the sunrise is less spectacular, but the panorama stays clear once the sun is up: no operator can guarantee a clear sky.

Tips

  • In booking listings noted in October 2026, a group climb with no meal or transfer starts at about 25 USD, and a full tour (hotel pickup, guide, breakfast) is more like 35 to 75 USD per adult; options with hot springs, coffee or bikes cost more. Always compare what is included: round-trip transfer from Ubud, Canggu or Seminyak, guide, headlamp, breakfast, water, entry fee. A travel blog notes an access fee of about 100,000 IDR per person and a local guide at 300,000 to 600,000 IDR per group when you climb on your own: the figure is not official, so confirm it. On the ground, village associations in practice require a licensed guide at the start of the trail. "Private" climbs cost more but avoid the line of headlamps on the path. Bring a warm jacket (it is cold at the top), sturdy walking shoes with good grip, water and your ID. The climb is of moderate difficulty, but the path becomes slippery on the volcanic stones; people with knee or heart problems should skip it or choose a shorter viewpoint.

How to get there

Tours pick you up at your hotel between about 1 am and 3 am, depending on distance: allow about 1 to 1.5 hours by road from Ubud and 2 to 2.5 hours from Seminyak, Canggu or Sanur (approximate times). The walk begins at the foot of the volcano, on the lake side. Without a transfer you need a driver or a scooter, which is hard at night on mountain roads, so an included transfer is useful. For a full day you can combine it with the Tegallalang rice terraces or compare with an Ubud day tour; a private driver lets you leave at the time you choose.

Opening hours

Best: April to October, at sunrise
Night excursion: hotel pickup between about 1 am and 3 am, walk starts around 3 to 4 am, summit before sunrise, back at the hotel mid-morning (exact times given at booking)
