| Situation | Level of caution | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beer in a bottle or can opened in front of you | Low | Industrial product, sealed |
| Branded wine or spirits, sealed bottle, established bar or hotel | Low to moderate | Bottles can be refilled, so check the cap |
| Cocktail with arak, "arak attack", free shots | High | Alcohol often unlabelled, origin unknown |
| Unlabelled bottle sold at the roadside or in an unlicensed shop | Very high | Bootleg alcohol, often cut |
| Very cheap "open bar" night | High | A price that is too low is a warning sign |
How to avoid the risk
- Skip arak unless you can identify the brand and the venue: otherwise choose beer, wine or a branded spirit poured from an original bottle.
- Look at the bottle: intact cap, sharp printed label, batch number. A known brand in a doubtful-looking bottle can be a fake.
- Buy from a supermarket or a declared liquor store, not from the roadside or a beach seller.
- Be wary of very cheap offers: cocktails at 1 or 2 euros, all-you-can-drink buckets, free shots.
- Watch your glass: see scams and safety in Bali and nightlife.
- In a villa, do not let a stranger mix drinks from a bottle you did not see sealed.
Warning signs
Health authorities describe symptoms close to those of drunkenness: confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, vomiting, stomach pain. The tell-tale sign is damage to eyesight (blurred vision, spots, glare). The first signs can appear many hours after the drink, sometimes the next day, which is why it is dangerous to put them down to a hangover. A small quantity can be enough to cause blindness or death.
What to do if in doubt
- Go straight to a hospital or private clinic in Bali, without waiting for it to pass. The national emergency number is 112.
- Say clearly what you drank, where and when; keep the bottle or a photo of it.
- Warn the people drinking with you: several people in the same group can be affected.
- Tell your insurer and your family. Private care is often paid up front: health and repatriation insurance such as SafetyWing covers treatment and medical evacuation, not trip cancellation. See also travel insurance for Bali.
The legal side
Alcohol is legal for adults in Bali (21 and over), but bootleg alcohol is a known problem: the law and penalties are summarised in laws, fines and prison in Bali. After a night of drinking, never get on a scooter: renting a scooter in Bali.
FAQ
Can you drink alcohol in Bali safely? Yes in the vast majority of cases, by choosing branded drinks poured from an original bottle in established venues. The risk is concentrated in unlabelled alcohol.
Is arak dangerous? Arak from an identified producer is not poison in itself, but anonymous arak is the source most often cited in poisonings. If you want to try it, do so in a reliable venue.
How can you recognise fake alcohol? You cannot by smell or taste. Rely on where the bottle came from, not on how it looks.
