The summary

The split gate of Lempuyang

The group tour

It is the best-selling option: transport, entrance fees and often a sarong, with a fixed sequence that generally includes Tirta Gangga and Besakih temple. The departure from Ubud is around 3 am to 4 am depending on the offer. Check what is included (entry, shuttle from the car park, sarong, lunch), the group size and the arrival time at the temple: arriving after daybreak makes the wait grow.

The private driver

It lets you arrive before the groups: according to our page, the first shuttles leave around 5:30 am and the wait can stay under an hour, whereas it reaches three to four hours around 10 am. It is also the option that lets you skip Besakih or go via Amed. Compare with private driver in Bali for rates. Bring cash for entrance fees and the shuttle.

Sleeping nearby

A night in Amed puts the temple about 15 km away: you arrive before the crowd without a night drive, and can follow with diving or snorkelling. It is longer but less tiring.

What to know

  • Fees: about IDR 100,000 entry per foreign adult and about IDR 50,000 for the return shuttle according to guides, unofficial.
  • Dress: sarong and sash compulsory, shoulders covered.
  • The photo: the "reflection in the water" is an effect made with a mirror or a phone by an on-site photographer, there is no pool; a tip is customary.
  • Season: in the dry season (April to October) Mount Agung is more often visible; see Bali in August 2027.

How to choose

  • Everything organised, tight budget: group tour.
  • Avoid the wait: private driver with a pre-dawn start.
  • Several sites in the east: night in Amed.
  • Little patience: Lahangan Sweet.
