Tirta Gangga Water Palace: Opening Hours, Prices and Visit

Updated on October 23, 2026

Tirta Gangga is a former royal water garden in eastern Bali, created around 1946 by the last king of Karangasem. Its name means "water of the Ganges". You walk on stepping stones over ponds full of koi carp, between statues, fountains and a tall tiered fountain in the middle of the garden. The visit is short and pleasant, with the valley's rice terraces all around. It combines naturally with Lempuyang, roughly twenty minutes away by road.

Highlights

The tiered fountain and the ponds

The tiered fountain and the ponds

The heart of the garden is a tower fountain surrounded by ponds and statues. A line of stepping stones crosses the water among the koi carp: it is the most photographed view on the site.

The statues in the water

The statues in the water

Stone statues rise out of the ponds along the path. The light is softest early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when groups are fewer.

The bathing pools and rice fields

A spring-fed pool allows swimming (an extra charge of around 10,000 IDR is sometimes mentioned); above the garden a path climbs between the valley's terraced rice fields.

Tips

  • Prices noted in October 2026 from travel guides, with no official source: about 90,000 IDR per foreign adult, 45,000 IDR for a child aged 5 to 12, 70,000 IDR from age 65; a boat ride on the pond around 20,000 IDR, parking about 5,000 IDR by scooter and 10,000 IDR by car. A sarong is not required, but modest dress is expected, and there is little shade: bring sunscreen and water. Opinions are mixed: some find the price high for a one-hour visit. The site is quietest before 10:00; most groups pass between 12:00 and 16:00. Combine with the Gates of Heaven at Lempuyang, the Besakih temple or Amed.

How to get there

Tirta Gangga is in the Karangasem district of eastern Bali, about 60 km and two hours by road from Ubud. Public transport does not serve the site well: a private driver is simplest, or a day tour. The trip is best shared with Lempuyang; see private driver in Bali.

Opening hours

Best: Early morning
Daily, about 7:00-18:00 according to guides (some give 6:00-19:00); last entry in the late afternoon (hours not confirmed by an official source: check before you come, especially on Hindu holy days)
