Tenganan Village (Bali Aga): Donation, Hours, Geringsing Weaving and How to Visit
Tenganan Pegringsingan is a village in East Bali, in Karangasem, home to the Bali Aga, the descendants of the people who lived on the island before the Javanese court arrived. It is known for its layout of long paved lanes lined with identical houses and for geringsing, a double-ikat cloth. There is no fixed ticket: you leave a donation at the welcome post and sign a guest book. Allow 1 to 2 hours. Sources give different hours (7:00 to 18:00 or 8:00 to 17:00) and we found no official source: confirm on site (October 2026).
Highlights

The main lane and the aligned houses
The village is built in rows of houses with identical walls and gates, facing each other along a paved lane. It is the view that sets Tenganan apart from other Balinese villages.

The weaving and basketry workshops
Several families sell geringsing, lontar-leaf baskets and bamboo goods from their homes. Geringsing is hand-woven in double ikat over months, even years for the finest pieces, so genuine cloths are expensive. Compare, ask who wove the piece and feel free to leave without buying.
The Perang Pandan (mekare-kare)
This ritual fight with thorny pandan leaves takes place once a year, usually in June or July according to sources. The village is then packed: outside that date you will find it quiet.

Tips
- There is no official rate: a donation is expected, and one guide mentions 50,000 to 100,000 IDR per person (unofficial source; a smaller amount is common, the point is to sign the guest book). Wear clothes that cover knees and shoulders. Shops have no price tags: bargain calmly. The village is visited on foot, with no tour buses inside. For a full day in the east, combine it with Candidasa, Tirta Gangga and Lempuyang.
How to get there
Tenganan is about ten minutes by road from Candidasa (estimate) and around 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 from Ubud (estimate, depending on traffic). The simplest option is a driver or a day tour of the east; see private driver in Bali. Day tours to Lempuyang and Tirta Gangga often add Tenganan: it is the cheapest way if you want the other sites too.
