Candidasa (Bali): things to do, beaches, where to stay and day trips in the east
Candidasa (Candi Dasa) is a small, quiet seaside town on Bali's east coast, in Karangasem, facing Padangbai bay where boats leave for Lombok and the Gilis. Its beach is narrow and eroded: people come mostly as a base for east Bali (Tenganan, Tirta Gangga, Amed, Lempuyang) and for snorkeling. Allow 2 to 3 nights to enjoy it. According to guides consulted in October 2026 (the most recent dates from November 2025), there are hotels, villas and restaurants, with a more local feel than the south.
Highlights

Candidasa bay
A calm coast with islets offshore: the place suits strolling, snorkeling and quiet sunsets better than swimming in big waves. The nicest beaches are elsewhere: Pasir Putih (about 15 minutes by car to the east according to one guide, rough road), Blue Lagoon (snorkeling) and the white sand beach at Padangbai.
Tenganan
A Bali Aga village, the name for people regarded as descendants of the first Balinese, famous for weaving double ikat "gringsing" cloth; many houses are also workshop-shops. It is a short trip from Candidasa.
Around
Tirta Gangga, Taman Ujung, Amed, the Gates of Heaven at Lempuyang and Tibumana waterfall are a short drive away; the Goa Lawah bat cave is about 25 minutes to the west.

Tips
- Candidasa suits those who want calm, not nightlife. For east-side excursions, a driver by the day is simplest: see private driver in Bali. To compare the island's areas to stay, see where to stay in Bali; for another east-side base, see Sidemen. If you are heading to Lombok or the Gilis, the port of Padangbai is very close: see Bali to Lombok.
How to get there
Candidasa is in east Bali, on the road between Padangbai and Amed; simplest is a private transfer or driver from the airport or Ubud (ask the driver for the duration, it depends a lot on traffic).
