Sacred Monkey Forest Ubud: Prices, Opening Hours and Rules to Follow
The Sacred Monkey Forest is a small tropical forest south of central Ubud, home to hundreds of long-tailed macaques around three working Hindu temples. You walk beneath tall trees along stone paths, past moss-covered statues and bridges over ravines. It is a short visit, easy on foot from the centre, but the monkeys are wild and quick to steal: the rules below prevent most incidents. Allow one to one and a half hours.
Highlights

The macaques and their keepers
The monkeys roam freely between the paths and statues. Site staff keep an eye on them and step in when needed; if you are bitten or scratched, tell a staff member straight away.

The forest and its paths
Tall trees, stone steps and moss-covered statues set the mood. The main paths take under an hour; the southernmost part is often quieter.
The temples
The site has three Hindu temples tied to the community's rites: Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal, Pura Beji (a sacred spring) and Pura Prajapati (near the cemetery). They stay closed to visitors: you look from outside, without going in.

Tips
- Prices noted in October 2026 from recent travel guides, with no official source: roughly 100,000 to 130,000 IDR per adult, cheaper for children, with a higher weekend rate according to some sources. Tickets are sold on site (counter or kiosks) or on the forest's official website; an online ticket is usually not changeable. Rules: do not feed the monkeys or carry visible food, do not touch them, take off sunglasses and jewellery, keep phone and bag closed, and leave plastic bags at the hotel. Do not stare a monkey in the eye or show your teeth. For a day around Ubud, see Ubud in one day and the Ubud art market.
How to get there
The main entrance is at the southern end of Jalan Monkey Forest, in Padangtegal, Ubud. From the centre allow about 15 to 20 minutes on foot along a sometimes narrow pavement, or a short ride by car or scooter. Taxis and drivers wait at the exit; agree the price before getting in.
