Dance Shows in Ubud: Legong, Kecak, Times and Tickets

Updated on October 24, 2026

Ubud offers Balinese dance almost every evening. The easiest show to book is the legong dance at the Ubud Palace (Puri Saren), at 19:30, for about 100,000 IDR (around 6 USD on booking sites) and about 1.5 hours long. Other evenings and other venues stage barong, ramayana or kecak; the programme changes by day. Prices and times seen in guides and on booking sites in October 2026, with no official schedule: confirm the evening's programme at the venue entrance or with your hotel.

Highlights

The legong dance

The legong dance

Dancers in golden costumes and flower headdresses, accompanied by the gamelan (percussion orchestra), tell a story of love and legend. The movements of the hands, eyes and fingers are part of the storytelling.

Ramayana, barong and other programmes

Ramayana, barong and other programmes

Depending on the evening, the palace and other Ubud venues stage ramayana, barong (the mythical lion-spirit) or another piece from the repertoire. A tour operator publishes a weekly rotation (legong almost every evening, ramayana on Tuesday, barong on Wednesday), but that schedule is from a tour package, not from the venue.

The kecak

The kecak, a collective chant by dozens of men, is mostly seen at Uluwatu at sunset (see the kecak dance at Uluwatu). In Ubud, kecak is given by some venues on certain evenings.

Tips

  • Palace tickets are sold on site and on booking sites; children pay the same rate as adults on some offers. Arrive 45 minutes to 1 hour before the start: the best seats go early and seats are not always numbered. In the evening it can be cool in the rainy season: bring a light jacket, and mosquito repellent. Photography is generally allowed, without flash; respect the dancers and the audience. To complete the evening, see the Ubud art market, right opposite, and Ubud. For Balinese culture by day, see the Neka museum.

How to get there

The Ubud Palace (Puri Saren) is in the centre, at the junction of the palace street and the main street; it is reached on foot from most central hotels. Other venues are a few kilometres away: a driver or scooter makes the night return easier (see private driver in Bali).
