Liberty Wreck at Tulamben: diving and snorkelling, prices and tours

Updated on October 24, 2026

The USAT Liberty is an American cargo ship stranded at Tulamben on Bali's north-east coast, now one of Indonesia's best-known dive sites. The wreck is reached from the beach, about thirty metres from the shore, with the top about 3 m below the surface and the bottom around 29 to 30 m: it can be visited by snorkelling as well as diving. According to booking sites consulted in October 2026, a snorkelling day from southern Bali is advertised at about 29 dollars (with kayak) to 75 dollars (with lunch), a dive trip for certified divers at about 109 dollars, a try dive at about 110 dollars. No official access fee for the site was found.

Highlights

The coral-covered wreck

The coral-covered wreck

The ship, about 120 m long, is covered in corals and sponges and home to many fish. Most sources say it was hit by a torpedo in 1942; the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 pushed it into the water (some listings give a different version).

The interior and structures

The interior and structures

The steel frame forms arches and passages that divers explore. A swim-through inside the wreck is possible for advanced divers; snorkellers stay near the surface, above the upper part of the wreck.

The beach and surroundings

Tulamben beach is made of pebbles, and entries into the water are slippery; water shoes help. A "snorkelling and water palace" package also visits Tirta Gangga; the nearby village of Amed is a base for diving in the east.

Practical info

Tips

  • The current can be strong at times according to traveller reviews: do not go alone if you are a weak swimmer, and follow the guide. For diving, take a local instructor or club; some dive prices exclude marine park fees (ask). The beach pebbles are hot in the middle of the day. A transfer from Ubud or the south is long: see private driver in Bali for a day at your own pace. For a base in the area, see Amed. Indicative operator prices, to be confirmed.

How to get there

Tulamben is about 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Ubud (estimate), longer from southern Bali; most visitors come on a day tour with hotel pickup, or sleep at Tulamben or Amed.

Opening hours

Best: Early morning, May to September
Site open to all from the beach; guided trips generally in the morning (very early departure from the south), lasting 5 to 10 hours depending on the tour.
