Mount Agung in Bali: sunrise climb, difficulty, price and which route to choose
Mount Agung is Bali's highest volcano, at 3,142 m, and the island's sacred mountain. The climb is done in the middle of the night to see the sunrise from the summit: it is hard, only for fit walkers, and done with a guide. There are two routes. The Besakih route is the longer one: about 12 hours in total, 6 to 7 hours up and 5 to 6 hours down according to operators, with the summit around 6:15 to 6:30. The Pasar Agung route is shorter and easier. 2026 prices from operators: about 70 USD per person for Pasar Agung with transport, 80 to 109 USD for Besakih. Check the state of the volcano before booking: access depends on its alert level. Information from operators, with no official source.
Highlights

The volcano seen from the east
An almost perfect cone that dominates eastern Bali; it is the view you get from the viewpoints at Amed, Tirta Gangga and Lempuyang, without having to climb it. Photo taken from the east of the island.
Which route to choose
Besakih: the hardest and most complete climb (summit at 3,142 m), for experienced hikers; about 80 to 109 USD. Pasar Agung: shorter and more accessible, about 70 USD with transport; one operator offers a summit in about 10 hours, from about 79 USD for groups of five or more. On Klook, the Agung sunrise hike shows about 4.8 out of 5 from about 161 reviews, with a note that the climb is difficult (October 2026).
A less demanding option
For the pleasure of a volcano without this difficulty, Mount Batur at sunrise is far more accessible; to see Agung from a distance, see Lempuyang and Amed. The great temple of Besakih is at the foot of the mountain.

Tips
- Book a guide: it is strongly recommended, and one source says everyone must turn back together if one group member gives up, so a private group is more flexible. Bring a headlamp, a warm jacket (it is cold at the summit), hiking shoes and water. Plan the climb at night, starting around midnight or 1:00 depending on the route (estimate). Do not set off on a volcano that is on alert. Unofficial prices, to confirm. For transport, see private driver in Bali.
How to get there
The starting points are at the Besakih temple and the Pasar Agung temple, in north-east Bali; most offers include pick-up from your hotel (Ubud, Sidemen, east coast). Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours from Ubud depending on the starting point (estimate).
