The summary

Beach on Gili Trawangan

How to get there

Fast boats leave from Padang Bai, about 1 to 2 hours by road from Sanur and Ubud (approximate times). Plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before departure to exchange your voucher at the counter. Some offers include a transfer from southern Bali or Ubud; check the pickup point. A booking listing mentions a port fee of IDR 10,000 on departure and a Gili entrance tax of about IDR 20,000, payable in cash at the port: unofficial information, to confirm. If you stay in Ubud, a private driver simplifies the early departure.

Which island to choose

  • Gili Trawangan: the largest and liveliest, with bars, restaurants and diving.
  • Gili Air: relaxed and calmer, often preferred by families and couples.
  • Gili Meno: the smallest and quietest.

The islands have no motor vehicles: you get around on foot, by bicycle or by horse cart. For diving, see also scuba diving in Bali.

When to go

The sea is calmer in the dry season (April to October); in the rainy season, swell can cancel crossings: leave a margin before your return flight. See Bali in August 2027 and Bali in January 2027.

Closer alternatives

If you are short of time, Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan can be done in a day, with a much shorter boat trip; see also Nusa Penida: east or west.
