Denpasar (Bali): what to see, museum, Bajra Sandhi monument and airport

Updated on October 25, 2026

Denpasar is the capital of Bali, a dense, little-visited city between Sanur, Kuta and Ubud. Most travellers only come through its airport: Bali's international airport has the code DPS ("Denpasar"), but it is located to the south, in Badung district, not in the city centre. If you have half a day, the city is worth the Bali Museum, the Bajra Sandhi monument, the large Badung market and the Jagatnatha temple. Information from guides consulted in October 2026, no official source: confirm prices and hours on site.

Highlights

The Bajra Sandhi monument

The Bajra Sandhi monument

A monument to the Balinese people's struggle, with a central tower and dioramas on the island's history: 33 three-dimensional scenes according to one guide. The top offers a view of the city. According to one guide entry is 50,000 IDR for an adult and 25,000 IDR for a child under 17; the hours given run from 8:00 to 18:00 or from 8:30 to 16:30 (10:00 at weekends): confirm.

The Bali Museum

The Bali Museum

The oldest and most important museum on the island, in pavilions in the palace and temple styles of several Balinese regions. One guide gives 100,000 IDR for a foreigner; this figure is unconfirmed. To understand Balinese culture before heading out on a tour, see Ubud.

Badung market and Jagatnatha temple

The city's traditional market is best visited in the morning; Jagatnatha is an active Hindu temple near the centre: dress properly, a sarong is needed.
