Pemuteran in Bali: diving, snorkelling, Menjangan and how to get there from Ubud
Pemuteran is a seaside village in north-west Bali, known for diving and snorkelling and as a base for Menjangan Island. It is far from Ubud: allow 3 to 4 hours by road (estimate), so sleep there at least one night rather than doing a round trip. On site, Pemuteran Bay has its own dive and snorkel spots, and the trips to Menjangan leave from here. Price points of October 2026: snorkelling in the bay from 450,000 rupiah, a half-day at Menjangan around 950,000 rupiah (6 hours, park ticket included) according to one dive centre, and a 2-dive Menjangan outing around 1,100,000 rupiah. Information from guides and operators, with no official price list: confirm with the operator.
Highlights

Underwater at Pemuteran
The bay has reefs close to shore and statues placed underwater, like the one in the photo; snorkelling is possible there without a boat according to one dive centre. Beginners can start here before Menjangan.
Menjangan, the main outing
From Pemuteran, the boat trip to Menjangan (see Menjangan) is the most requested: two snorkel stops and lunch, from about 26 USD on GetYourGuide in October 2026; guided diving from about 75 USD. The national park ticket is sometimes separate (about 200,000 rupiah on weekdays and 300,000 at weekends and public holidays according to one guide, 2020 figures to confirm).
Which centre to choose
Pemuteran's dive centres offer both bay dives and Menjangan trips; compare what is included (equipment, park ticket, lunch, hotel pick-up) rather than the price alone. For diving in general, see scuba diving in Bali.
Practical info
Tips
- Book diving ahead in high season. The drive from Ubud is long: the road crosses the island and traffic varies; a driver is more comfortable (see private driver in Bali). Bring cash, reef-safe sunscreen and a UV rash vest. Do not touch the coral. For another dive base on the coast, see Tulamben and the Liberty wreck. Unofficial prices, to confirm.
How to get there
About 3 to 4 hours by car from Ubud (estimate). There is no practical public transport: choose a day driver, a transfer or a stay combined with the east or north of the island.
