Medewi, Surfing in West Bali: Bali's Longest Left, Season, Level and Lessons

Updated on October 25, 2026

Medewi is a long, soft left-hand point break in Jembrana on Bali's west coast, far from the crowds of Canggu and Uluwatu. According to guides, the best days run past 800 m, others say 400 m. The bottom is boulders over a shallow reef: intermediate surfers get the most from it, with care. The best season is regular swell, May to September (April to October for others). Lessons start from about 38 to 93 USD depending on the format (GetYourGuide, October 2026).

Highlights

The left-hand wave

The left-hand wave

A long shoulder that peels over the rock, soft enough for improving surfers. When the swell rises, take-offs are cleaner.

The lesson at Medewi

Several offers exist: a 2-hour group lesson for beginners and intermediates (from about 88 to 93 USD with transport from Canggu, Kuta, the airport or Seminyak), a 1.5-hour lesson (about 45 to 50 USD) or a private 2-hour lesson (about 38 USD), and a 9-hour day with a local instructor from about 29 USD. Prices vary a lot; check what is included (board, transport, lunch).

The drive west

The coast between Tabanan and Jembrana is little visited; you can stop on the way at quiet villages and beaches.

Practical info

Tips

  • Guides disagree on level (accessible to beginners for some, a shallow reef so rather advanced for others): if in doubt, take a lesson with a local instructor. The best tide depends on sources (mid, mid to high, all tides). To compare with Canggu's spots, see surf spots by level and surf lessons in Canggu. A driver is advised (private driver in Bali).

How to get there

Medewi is about 1 h 30 by car from Seminyak according to one source, 2 to 3 hours from the tourist hubs of the south (estimate, depending on traffic); Canggu is in between. Lessons with transport from Canggu are offered by several operators.

Opening hours

Best: May to September, regular swell
