Mount Batukaru: Hike, Duration, Guide, Price and Season (2026)

Updated on October 25, 2026

Gunung Batukaru (2,276 m) is Bali's second-highest peak and a sacred mountain, far less visited than Batur or Agung. The climb to the summit takes 5 to 6 hours according to one organiser (under 4 hours for a fit hiker according to Lonely Planet); the sunrise return trip leaves around 2:00 and lasts about 8 hours (4 hours up, 3 h 30 down). A guide is strongly advised because trails disappear in vegetation in the wet season. Prices seen on GetYourGuide: about 81 to 89 USD per person (October 2026).

Highlights

The summit at sunrise

The summit at sunrise

The night climb reaches the 2,276 m summit for dawn; the most-booked tour includes a light breakfast at the top and is rated 4.8 for the operator. Demanding but accessible to most fit walkers, according to an organiser.

The two starting points

The most common starts from the temple Pura Luhur Batukaru, on the south flank; the start at Pura Malen, in Pujungan, to the north-west, is more remote. A variant starts near Jatiluwih and needs a guide and driver.

The easy version

If the summit is too long, a forest hike with waterfall and village, temple visit, lunch and massage exists at about 78 USD, with mixed reviews (value judged uneven by one traveller).
