Updated on October 25, 2026

Pura Luhur Batukaru is an 11th-century mountain temple on the slopes of Gunung Batukaru in Tabanan, in damp forest and almost free of tourists. Sources disagree on the price: free entry with sarong hire at IDR 20,000-40,000 according to one guide, IDR 15,000 to 20,000 with a sarong included according to another (October 2026, unofficial). Allow 8:00 to 18:00 (17:00 according to one source) and 1 h 30 to 2 h 30 by road from Ubud, Denpasar or Seminyak. The temple is 15-20 minutes from the Jatiluwih rice terraces: visit both together.

Highlights

The courtyards and the seven-tiered meru

The courtyards and the seven-tiered meru

Three grassy courtyards lead to the main shrine, a seven-tier meru dedicated to Mahadewa, the god of Gunung Batukaru. Carved wooden pavilions and small shrines surround it. The inner courtyards are for prayer.

The shrines of the three lakes

Altars are dedicated to Lakes Tamblingan, Buyan and Beratan, and freshwater springs are used for purification rites. The temple was reportedly destroyed in 1604 and rebuilt in 1959 according to one guide.

A protector temple

It is counted among Bali's nine directional temples, protector of the island's west. No official source was consulted for these historical details.

Nearby

Jatiluwih, Lake Tamblingan and Tabanan; the neighbouring peak has its own page: Mount Batukaru.
