Tabanan (Bali): what to see, Tanah Lot, Jatiluwih, Bedugul and Batukaru, and how to plan it
The Tabanan area, in western Bali, brings together three of the island's most visited sites: the sea temple of Tanah Lot, the UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih rice terraces, and the Ulun Danu Beratan temple at Bedugul, in the highlands. Other sites listed by booking sites are the Alas Kedaton monkey forest, Batukaru temple, the Subak Museum and Pasut beach. Many tours offer 1 day for the three big sites, and several recommend 2 to 3 days for the area. Guide points from October 2026, without official prices: see each page for prices.
Highlights

Jatiluwih
The largest rice terraces in Bali, at about 700 m altitude, so noticeably cooler than the coast. See Jatiluwih.

Tanah Lot
A temple on a rock facing the sea, very busy at sunset. Come early or outside peak time to avoid the crowd. See Tanah Lot.
Ulun Danu Beratan
The temple on Lake Beratan, at Bedugul, cool in the highlands; see Ulun Danu Beratan. Nearby, Munduk and its waterfalls are covered in Munduk.
Practical info
Tips
- A logical one-day route from Ubud or the south: Jatiluwih in the morning, Bedugul at midday, Tanah Lot late afternoon. An organised tour, or a driver, saves you mountain driving; see private driver in Bali and which temples to visit in Bali. If you prefer waterfalls, Nungnung waterfall (neighbouring Badung area) is often combined with Jatiluwih and Bedugul: see Nungnung waterfall. Bring a warm layer for Bedugul and Jatiluwih.
How to get there
Tabanan is about 1 h 30 to 2 h from Ubud and the south of Bali depending on the stop (estimate); the sites are far from each other (Bedugul in the north, Tanah Lot on the coast). A car with driver or a tour is recommended.
