Where to stay
For seniors two bases work. Sanur has a flat seafront promenade, little relief and a calm pace; Ubud offers culture, but the streets are uneven and the centre is often noisy. When booking, ask for a ground-floor room or a hotel with a lift, and check the route between room, pool and restaurant: many villas and rice-field hotels have steps. An air-conditioned room with a bed at a good height matters more than a view.
The pace that works
- One outing in the morning, from about 8 am to noon, before the heat; a nap at the hotel, then an early dinner.
- A private driver rather than a scooter or shared taxi: see car hire with a driver. He waits, opens the door and knows the car parks closest to the entrance.
- Avoid long transfers on arrival day: the airport is 1 to 2 hours by road from Ubud; see Bali airport to Ubud.
- Temples: covered clothing and a sarong, explained in the temple dress code; choose them with which temples to visit.
Health and safety
Drink bottled water (tap water in Bali), keep rehydration salts, and know what to do after a monkey bite at the Sacred Monkey Forest (rabies, monkeys and dogs). Private hospitals often ask for payment up front: see travel insurance for Bali, whose age limits vary by insurer, and pharmacies and Bali belly. Carry your medicines in their original boxes with the prescription.
FAQ
Is Bali suitable for older people? Yes with a slow pace, well-chosen accommodation and a driver. The difficulty comes from steps, heat and traffic.
How many days should I allow? A week to ten days lets you do just one outing a day, with rest days.
Can you do outings without stairs? Yes: the Beratan lake gardens, the Saraswati temple and roadside viewpoints need little walking.
