What you see
The complex is a former court of justice of the Klungkung kings. The court pavilion and the floating pavilion (Bale Kambang) are covered in wayang-style paintings, with Bhima Swarga scenes showing punishments in the afterlife. A guided visit helps you read the panels; without a guide, rely on the museum labels.
Fitting Klungkung into the east road
Klungkung is a good stop between Ubud and the east of the island. Combine it with the Goa Lawah bat cave, then with the Taman Ujung water palaces or Tirta Gangga. A private driver runs this circuit without you driving.
