In Mas: woodcarving
You can walk into workshops freely: some sit away from the main street, so it pays to follow the side lanes. Carvers take custom orders if you bring photos and agree a size. Short courses of about three hours exist, to book in advance. The Mas style is known for naturalistic forms and figures from Hindu mythology. Compare before buying, haggle politely and ask how the piece will be shipped; see also souvenirs to bring back from Bali.
In Batuan: painting
The Batuan style starts with a detailed black ink drawing, then filled with discreet colours. To see works without buying, the Neka Museum in Ubud presents Balinese painting; for silver, see Celuk.
Getting there
Without a scooter, a driver or a tour avoids the narrow, congested roads around Ubud. Go in the morning, when workshops are open and traffic is calmer.
