Where to stay on your own

Choose a stay with a reception open in the evening, recent reviews from women travellers and an address you can reach without walking in the dark. See where to stay in Ubud and in Canggu.

Getting around: scooter, taxi, night

Guides name scooter accidents as the main physical risk. If you ride, you need a valid international permit for two-wheelers, otherwise the police can fine you and insurance will not pay: read scooter rental. The Grab and Gojek apps are safer at night; compare both, prices differ. If a driver makes you uncomfortable, you can end the ride, report it in the app and trust your instinct.

Dress, temples, alcohol

Casual clothes are fine in town, but temples require a sarong and covered shoulders: see the temple dress code. In the evening keep your drink in sight and read methanol in alcohol in Bali. For the classic scams, see scams and safety.

Meeting people

Cooking classes, yoga, surf lessons and small-group tours make it easy to meet people: see making friends in Bali. Keep insurance that covers care (travel insurance for Bali) and the emergency number 112.

The essentials at a glance

Transport, temples, insurance

  • Download Grab and Gojek: prices sometimes differ a lot for the same trip; if a driver makes you uncomfortable, end the ride and report it in the app.
  • Temples generally ask for a sarong and sash, often lent at the entrance.
  • Travel health insurance is essential if you ride; SafetyWing covers longer stays.
