Angel's Billabong (Nusa Penida): tide, price, safety and how to get there

Updated on October 25, 2026

Angel's Billabong is a natural turquoise pool carved into the rock on the west coast of Nusa Penida, a few minutes' walk from Broken Beach. A visit takes 20 to 30 minutes, as part of the west circuit (with Kelingking and Crystal Bay), and the best moment is low tide in the morning (one guide says 7 am to 10 am). Guides consulted in October 2026 give an entrance fee of 10,000 to 20,000 IDR depending on the source (sometimes only parking, about 10,000 IDR); no official source found: confirm on site. The pool is connected to the ocean: ask locally before you swim.

Highlights

The natural pool

The natural pool

A basin of dark rock filled with clear water, open on one side to the ocean. Waves sometimes break over the edge: that is the appeal of the place and the reason for caution.

From the cliff, the pool looks like an infinity pool set on the sea; morning light gives the sharpest colours.

Broken Beach next door

The natural arch of Broken Beach is a few minutes' walk away and is visited in the same outing; see Nusa Penida for the island as a whole.

Practical info

Tips

  • Swimming depends on the tide and the swell, and sources contradict each other (from "allowed at low tide in calm seas" to "forbidden"). Follow the signs and the guards' advice, never swim in a swell or at high tide, and keep children away from the edge. Shoes with good grip (wet rock), small change, water. For a full circuit, compare west and east in Nusa Penida: east or west; for boats and prices, see Nusa Penida in one day and Kelingking Beach.

How to get there

Fast boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida (about 30 to 45 minutes according to one guide, 150,000 to 250,000 IDR one way according to our day-trip page), then car or scooter to the west coast. The island's roads are narrow and damaged: a driver or an organised tour saves a lot of trouble.

Opening hours

Best: Morning, at low tide
Every day, about 6 am to 6 pm according to one guide (not confirmed by a second source); entry 10, 000 to 20, 000 IDR depending on sources, sometimes only parking at about 10, 000 IDR (unofficial, to be confirmed on site).
