Bedugul (Bali): what to see, temple price, market and strawberries, and how to plan the day
Bedugul is the cool lake district of central Bali, over 1,000 m above sea level around Lake Beratan: Ulun Danu Beratan temple, Candi Kuning market, strawberries, the Handara gate and the Banyumala waterfall trek. Plan half a day to a full day; from Ubud or Canggu it is about 1.5 to 2 hours each way (estimate). Prices from guides of October 2026, unofficial and to be confirmed: temple about 75,000 IDR (one guide says 100,000), market free from 9:00 to 18:00, Handara gate free.
Highlights

Ulun Danu Beratan temple
The must-see stop: its shrines seem to float on the lake, especially early in the morning. Open 7:00 to 19:00 according to guides, with gardens and a lakeside. Our full page: Ulun Danu Beratan temple.
Candi Kuning market and strawberries
Free entry, about 9:00 to 18:00: strawberries, passion fruit and souvenirs. To pick your own, one guide quotes 10,000 IDR entry and 75,000 IDR per kilo picked (prices to be confirmed). Buy fruit at the market, not the ready-made "baskets" offered at tourist-bus stops.
The Handara gate and the lake
The Handara gate, at the golf course entrance, is a free photo stop according to guides (open all day). On Lake Beratan, a boat ride starts around 100,000 IDR according to one guide; sellers ask 250,000 to 300,000 IDR for an hour for two, to be negotiated towards 200,000.

Tips
- Pick one of three ways. On your own or with a driver: the temple, market and Handara gate fit in half a day (private driver). On a tour: the one in our selection combines Bedugul, the lake and the Banyumala waterfall with a walk, ideal if you like to move. On the road north: Bedugul sits between Munduk and the rice terraces of Jatiluwih. Bring a jacket: it is cool and often rains in the afternoon. Dress modestly at the temple (shoulders and knees covered). Pay in cash.
How to get there
Bedugul is about 1.5 to 2 hours from Ubud and 2 hours from the airport, depending on traffic (estimate). By car with a driver, by scooter for experienced riders (mountain road, bends, rain), or on a tour.
