Balangan Beach (Bali): surf, tide, sunset, parking and how to get there
Balangan is a beach on the Bukit Peninsula, between Jimbaran and Uluwatu, known for its long reef break, its cliffs and its sunsets. It is quieter than Kuta or Padang Padang and takes 1 to 3 hours. According to guides consulted in October 2026, access is free (a donation at the entrance according to one) and parking costs about 5,000 IDR for a scooter and 10,000 for a car (an older guide says free). No official source found: confirm on the spot.
Highlights

The beach
A long crescent of pale sand at the foot of cliffs, with warungs up on the heights and surfers offshore. The tide changes the look of the beach a great deal.
Surfing
The reef break is long and spreads along the coast, which limits crowds; guides say it works best at mid to high tide. For swimming, high tide is better: at low tide the reef is exposed and getting into the water becomes difficult.
The sunset
Guides contradict each other on which way the beach faces, but agree on the cliff viewpoints, the safest bet for the evening sun. Further south, see also Bingin and Padang Padang; to compare the peninsula's beaches, see Uluwatu beaches.
Practical info
Tips
- Bring cash for parking and the warungs, water and sunscreen. The steps to the beach are steep: sturdy shoes. To catch the sunset, come an hour early. For a full evening on the peninsula, see Uluwatu temple and the kecak dance and where to stay in Uluwatu.
How to get there
About 8.5 km from the airport via Jalan Uluwatu 2 then Jalan Wanagiri, around 55 minutes according to one guide (estimate, depending on traffic). Driver, ride-hailing taxi or scooter (70,000 to 100,000 IDR a day): see renting a scooter in Bali. The ride-hailing pickup is a short walk from the car park.
