The summary

Sunset at Uluwatu temple

The three big classics

Uluwatu. The Uluwatu temple overlooks the ocean from the cliff; the kecak is at 18:00 according to most sources (19:00 according to some), and the time follows sunset. Expect crowds and thieving macaques.

Tanah Lot. The Tanah Lot temple is the most photographed. At low tide you can walk to the foot of the rock; at high tide it looks isolated. It is very busy late in the day.

Jimbaran. The Jimbaran beach offers sunset with a seafood dinner with your feet in the sand.

The quieter alternatives

Tips

  • Roads are jammed at sunset: leave early, especially from Ubud.
  • The sun sets earlier in ravines and behind rainy-season clouds: decide on the day from the sky.
  • A booked tour combines Uluwatu, the kecak and Jimbaran in one evening, which saves handling transport (private driver in Bali).
